HERITAGE VOLUNTEERING

Have you got a little of  your valuable time to give back to the community?  If so, you might like to consider volunteering through the The Arts Society Colchester.  Some of our members already volunteer with various local organisations where they are making a considerable contribution to preserving our heritage.

One of our members is taking part in an exciting new project researching the lives of twentieth century railway workers at the East Anglian Railway Museum, Wakes Colne.  The purpose of the project is to bring 'people' to the foreground of the story the museum is trying to tell about the railways in East Anglia. Volunteers will be able to explore and analyse information from census records, railway staff publications, and the extensive archive of original documents, to help create a narrative about rural railway workers. 

Others volunteer at Munnings Museum, Dedham, where you would be given full training as a room steward or perhaps help in creating a digital catalogue raisonné of the Munnings collection. 

Can you give some time to our local gallery, The Minories, where they require room stewards?  All you have to commit to is a couple of hours for as little or often as you can spare.  The recently refurbished gallery has changing exhibitions and attracts lots of visitors, just perfect for anyone who likes to interact with the public.  There is also a lovely cafe on site for refreshments. 

We can offer a fantastic opportunity to hear top class concerts and opera for free.  How, you may ask?  Just volunteer to support Wild Arts Opera and/or The Roman River Festival by volunteering to steward at these wonderful annual events. 

Maybe you would like to create a Heritage Trail.  For more information please see the Trails page of the website.  There are lots of resources available from The Arts Society to help with your project and it is an enjoyable way to work with like minded friends.   

For all of these projects you will be given full training and support if you choose to volunteer, or perhaps you would like to talk to a current volunteer and get to know your fellow volunteers.  A ‘shadowing’ experience for you to get a flavour of the work involved can also be arranged.
