Young Arts

Young Arts is our way of giving back to areas we draw our membership from and promoting all aspects of the Arts to young people who might not have the opportunity otherwise.

A recent project saw Nicola Burrell, a local much respected professional Artist, spend the day in Myland Primary School delivering a 2D to 3D art project to all of Key Stage 1. One of the many benefits of this eco friendly workshop, which also included a mathematical element, was that all the children need to create amazing 3D sculptures was a pair of scissors and some cardboard.

One of the projects you have helped sponsor this year is taking Opera in to primary schools. They had six weekly workshops and then came to Layer Marney to see a shortened version of 'The Marriage of Figaro' performed by Wild Arts. As well as studying the story of the opera the workshops included learning to sing a chorus, creating a wedding hat to wear at the performance and designing a pennant for inclusion on 160 metres of bunting which was festooned around the performance space. Some of the Arts Society volunteers helped on the day at Layer Marney and over the course of two performances managed to seat 11 schools which equated to almost 600 pupils and teachers.

It was wonderful to see how engaged the children were, interacting when required and even getting up to dance to the music. They all had a great time and left with big smiles on their faces. 

We continue our joint sponsoring with the local Rotary Club of a Choir competition for Primary schools from some of the less well off areas of the City. The choirs, which are made up of all ages from the schools, sing two songs, one that has been chosen for them all to sing and one they choose themselves. The competition is professionally judged and although there can only be one winning school, all the children are awarded a certificate that shows they have taken part.
