Young Arts

Over recent years The Arts Society Colchester has supported various projects in and around Colchester. After several successful years of collaboration with Karenza Jackson, a professional artist, we worked with her again last year to organise monoprinting workshops in Boxted Primary School.  The whole school was involved.  The PTA framed finished works from each class which were later exhibited in the hall and then offered for sale to raise funds for the school.  The local Women's Institute sold refreshments to everyone who came to see the art.  As in previous years, we were pleased to fund Amanda McLauchlan, an Art Therapist, to give six weeks of Art Therapy to troubled young teenagers at Kingston Hoe Special School.  This was highly beneficial to everyone involved.  We gave money to Firstsite to buy equipment for young people with social or behavioural difficulties such as Autism or Aspergers so that they can take part in art classes.  This is specialist equipment and can be used now and in the future by all age groups.

Most recently we have supported Magdalen Evans' art work at Chelmsford prison to young offenders and older men and are hoping to continue to help there as it is so beneficial to the men.

Previously we were fortunate to find an artist who designs and makes Islamic tiles to deliver three workshops for us.  Several volunteers worked with about 20 young people - from the refugee and immigrant communities, young carers and children from low income families.  Eight different nationalities attended, mixing with each other, and learning about different cultures.

We have given St Helena Hospice Colchester money to buy art materials over many years to benefit the children and young adults who are coping with bereavement.

The support that our Society gives in the furtherance of art appreciation and skills is always most welcome by those that we support.  If you know of any other group of young people who would benefit from our sponsorship please speak to any member of the committee.
