HERITAGE VOLUNTEERING

Heritage Volunteers from The Arts Society Colchester are involved in a number of interesting and stimulating projects in Colchester and the surrounding area. Our January 2019 Newsletter can be downloaded here.

EAST ANGLIAN RAILWAY MUSEUM, CHAPPEL

We began projects here for the first time in December 2017.  A team of three volunteers have recently completed condition checking and cataloguing the railway uniform collection.  We are now making an inventory of railway artefacts in the archive and aim to begin researching the Railway Roll of Honour.

BOURNE MILL, COLCHESTER

In conjunction with the History Department at the University of Essex and a local historian, we researched the history of Bourne Mill for articles for Bourne Mill’s web pages and for displays in the Mill. We hope to start work on the remaining topics to be researched shortly.  A second project was the creation of a garden and herb garden around the property (designed by two Arts Society Colchester Volunteers) and we continue to plant and maintain this with the National Trust Volunteers.

THE MUNNINGS ART MUSEUM, DEDHAM

A team of 9 volunteers participate in ongoing projects cataloguing the Museum’s archive material - paintings, house contents, press cuttings, rosettes and sale and other information relating to the paintings of Sir Alfred Munnings. We have in addition recently begun digitising the photo collection. Two volunteers also undertake stewarding duties at the Museum on a monthly basis.

COGGESHALL ABBEY  Arts Society Colchester volunteers lead guided tours during the year exploring the building’s fascinating 900-year-old history.

PREVIOUS PROJECTS

COLCHESTER CASTLE MUSEUM AND HOLLYTREES MUSEUM

Heritage Volunteers with dressmaking skills worked with museum staff, researching historical clothing design, making new patterns and garments for staff to dress in role to ‘bring history alive’ for school parties and visitors and help with historical interpretation. Heritage volunteers have also previously participated in conservation projects on both sites, repacking dress accessories from the costume collection, repackaging the doll collection at Hollytrees, and the rehousing, relabelling and digital documentation of the Castle’s extensive Roman coin and glass collection.

We would welcome more volunteers particularly to help at Bourne Mill guiding and gardening, at Munnings Art Museum to act as House stewards and also for a new project on Children’s Discovery Trails.  For more information on Heritage Volunteering with The Arts Society Colchester, please use the Contact Us page or speak to one of the Committee members.
