THE ARTS SOCIETY COLCHESTER

HERITAGE VOLUNTEERING

Heritage Volunteers from The Arts Society Colchester are involved in a number of interesting and stimulating projects in Colchester and the surrounding area.

COLCHESTER CASTLE MUSEUM AND HOLLYTREES MUSEUM

Recently ASCol Heritage Volunteers with dressmaking skills worked with museum staff  - researching historical clothing design, making new patterns and garments for staff to dress in role (such as a Roman soldier or a Norman lady) to ‘bring history alive’ for school parties and visitors and help with historical interpretation. Heritage volunteers have previously participated in conservation projects on both sites repacking dress accessories from the Costume Collection, repackaging the doll collection at Hollytrees, and the rehousing, relabelling and digital documentation of the Castle’s extensive Roman coin and glass collection.

BOURNE MILL, COLCHESTER

In conjunction with the History Department at the University of Essex and a local historian, ASCol volunteers carried out research into the history of Bourne Mill, a 16th century grade I listed building owned by the National Trust.  Research results are used for displays in the Mill and articles on the National Trust website. A second project was the creation of a garden and herb garden around the property and AsCol volunteers continue to plant and maintain this.

MUNNINGS ART MUSEUM, DEDHAM

A team of volunteers act as stewards and participate in ongoing projects cataloguing the paintings, house contents, press cuttings, horse show rosettes and have also recently started putting together a Catalogue Raisonne at Castle House, the former home of artist Sir Alfred Munnings.

PAYCOCKE'S HOUSE, COGGESHALL

Volunteers are working with a National Trust volunteer on the permanent inventory marking and documentation of Paycocke's furniture and china collection.

PAYCOCKE'S HOUSE GARDEN, COGGESHALL

ASCol volunteers were formerly involved in documenting and mapping the existing Arts and Crafts garden and compiling a plant inventory.

COGGESHALL ABBEY

ASCol volunteers lead guided tours during the summer delving into this building’s fascinating 900-year-old history.
