HERITAGE VOLUNTEERING

Heritage volunteering continues to flourish with Arts Society Colchester volunteers working on projects at the Munnings Art Museum, the East Anglian Railway Museum, Bourne Mill and Coggeshall Abbey.

THE MUNNINGS ART MUSEUM, DEDHAM

A team of volunteers participate in ongoing projects cataloguing the Museum’s archive material - paintings, photos, press cuttings and sale and other information relating to the paintings of Sir Alfred Munnings. This is being put together in a grand index which is already proving a useful resource for the Museum.  Two volunteers also undertake stewarding duties at the Museum during the summer months.

EAST ANGLIAN RAILWAY MUSEUM, CHAPPEL AND WAKES COLNE

New projects are underway at the East Anglian Railway Museum. Two volunteers are currently cataloguing technical drawings and pension records.  Another volunteer is involved in researching railway workers’ war records and the railway during the World Wars; research that helped to inform a very successful open day there for families in the summer.

BOURNE MILL

We continue to plant and maintain the herb garden (originally designed by two Arts Society Colchester Volunteers) with National Trust volunteers.  A previous project with the University of Essex History department involved researching Bourne Mill’s history for short articles for their web pages and for displays in the Mill.  If you have an interest in history and would like to be involved there are still topics to be researched. Bourne Mill would also particularly welcome volunteers as stewards and guides during the spring and summer months.

COGGESHALL ABBEY  Arts Society Colchester volunteers lead guided tours during the summer exploring the building’s fascinating 900-year-old history.

CHILDREN’S DISCOVERY TRAIL AT ALL SAINTS’ CHURCH, BRIGHTLINGSEA

Three Heritage Volunteers have recently started putting together an exciting Discovery Trail for children at All Saints Church, Brightlingsea.  For further details go to the Discovery Trails link under Volunteering.

PREVIOUS PROJECTS

COLCHESTER CASTLE MUSEUM AND HOLLYTREES MUSEUM

Heritage Volunteers with dressmaking skills worked with museum staff, researching historical clothing design, making garments for staff to dress in role to ‘bring history alive’ for school parties and visitors and help with historical interpretation. Heritage volunteers have also previously participated in conservation projects on both sites, repacking dress accessories from the costume collection, repackaging the doll collection at Hollytrees, and the rehousing, relabelling and digital documentation of the Castle’s extensive Roman coin and glass collection.
