THE ARTS SOCIETY COLCHESTER

HERITAGE VOLUNTEERING

Heritage Volunteers from The Arts Society Colchester are involved in a number of interesting and stimulating projects in Colchester and the surrounding area.

COLCHESTER CASTLE MUSEUM AND HOLLYTREES MUSEUM

ASCol heritage volunteers  participate in major conservation projects at both museums, having been shown and taught conservation methods by the conservator. These include repacking dress accessories from Colchester Museums’ Costume Collection, repackaging the doll collection at Hollytrees, and two ongoing projects involving the Castle's extensive Roman coin collection and significant collection of Roman glass. Three volunteers with dressmaking experience are also assisting Museum staff in producing and maintaining costumes such as a Roman soldier or a Norman lady, to wear when school parties visit.

BOURNE MILL, COLCHESTER

In conjunction with the History Department at the University of Essex and a local historian, ASCol volunteers have been carrying out research into the history of Bourne Mill, a grade I listed building dating back to the 16th century and owned by the National Trust.  Research results are used for displays in the Mill and on the National Trust website. A second ongoing project is the creation and maintenance of a garden and herb garden around the property.

MUNNINGS ART MUSEUM, DEDHAM

A team of volunteers participate in four projects, cataloguing the paintings, house contents, press cuttings and horse show rosettes at Castle House, the former home of artist Sir Alfred Munnings.

PAYCOCKE'S HOUSE, COGGESHALL

Volunteers are working with a National Trust volunteer on the permanent inventory marking and documentation of Paycocke's furniture and china collection.

PAYCOCKE'S GARDEN, COGGESHALL

Volunteers are involved in documenting and mapping the existing Arts & Crafts garden, identifying, researching and making  a plant inventory and in research for articles on the garden for Paycocke's National Trust website.

COGGESHALL ABBEY

ASCol volunteers lead guided tours during the summer delving into this building’s fascinating 900-year-old history.
